Softball Recap: Independence Picks Up Fourth Consecutive Victory

Independence entered their tilt with Sierra Linda on Thursday with three consecutive wins, and they'll enter their next game with four. Their pitcher stepped up to hand the Bulldogs a 21-0 shutout. The result was nothing new for the Patriots, who have now won seven matches by ten runs or more so far this season.

Mariana Perez Vargas made a splash no matter where she played. On the mound, she didn't allow a single earned run and allowed only one hit while striking out nine over four innings pitched. She has been consistent recently: she hasn't given up more than one earned run in four consecutive appearances. She was also solid in the batter's box, getting on base in two of her four plate appearances with three runs and one RBI.

In other batting news, the team relied heavily on Genevieve De La Cruz, who went 2-for-3 with one home run, four runs, and two RBI. That's the most runs she has posted since back in March. Another player making a difference was Carmen Hernandez, who went 2-for-3 with three runs and three RBI.

Independence was getting hits left and right and finished the game having posted a batting average of .400. They easily outclassed their opponents in that department as Sierra Linda only posted a batting average of .077.

Independence's record now sits at 13-3. As for Sierra Linda, their loss was their seventh straight on the road, which dropped their record down to 2-13.

Coming up, Independence will head out to take on Coconino at 4:00 p.m. on Monday. As for Sierra Linda, they will venture away from home to face off against Metro Tech at 3:45 p.m. on Friday.
