The Buena Colts's recent rough patch got a bit rougher on Tuesday after their fourth straight loss. They were beaten by Nogales 62-32. For those keeping track at home, that's the biggest loss Buena has suffered since December 5, 2023.
When it comes to explaining why Buena lost, one person who can't be blamed is Icsiss Perez. Despite the final result, she dropped a double-double on 12 points and 11 rebounds.
Nogales' victory was a true team effort, with many players turning in solid performances. Perhaps the best among them was Johanna Simpson, who dropped a double-double on 24 points and ten rebounds. As a matter of fact, that's the most points Simpson has scored all season. Another player making a difference was Mia Rodriguez, who scored 16 points along with seven rebounds and five steals.
Buena has traveled a rocky road recently, as they've lost six of their last eight contests, which put a noticeable dent in their 5-11 record this season. As for Nogales, their win ended a three-game drought on the road and puts them at 8-11.
Both teams are looking forward to the support of their home crowds in their upcoming games. Buena won't have much time to rest: their next matchup is against Desert View at 7:00 p.m. on January 17th. Desert View comes in on a streak of failing to score more than 17 points in their last ten games, a trend the squad is of course eager to reverse. As for Nogales, Nogales and Cholla will face off at 5:00 p.m. on January 18th without much rest after finishing up games yesterday. Cholla will have to bring their A-game into this one, as they are staring down a pretty big deficit in the MaxPreps Arizona Rankings (they are ranked 272nd, while Nogales is ranked 98th).
