Brody Howland made a big impact while hitting and pitching. He looked comfortable on the mound, tossing five innings while giving up just one earned (and one unearned) run off two hits. He has become a key player for Colorado Springs Christian: the team is 3-1 when he allows at most one earned run, but 2-9 otherwise. Howland was also big at the plate, getting on base in two of his three plate appearances with three stolen bases and two runs. Those three stolen bases gave him a new career-high.
In other batting news, the team relied heavily on Sam Cosner, who went 2-for-4 with two doubles, one stolen base, and one run. Those two doubles gave him a new career-high. Another player making a difference was Jimmy Phillips, who went a perfect 1-for-1 with one stolen base, one double, and one RBI.
Meanwhile, Woodland Park made easy work of Florence on Tuesday and carried off a 16-1 win. Considering the Panthers have won ten contests by more than six runs this season, Tuesday's blowout was nothing new.
Like Colorado Springs Christian, Woodland Park also got a great game from a two-way player: Wyatt Stimits. On the mound, he didn't allow a single earned run and allowed only two hits over four innings pitched. Stimits has been consistent recently: he hasn't given up more than two hits in three consecutive appearances. He was also stellar in the batter's box, going 2-for-3 with two triples, five RBI, and two runs.
In other batting news, Link Bryden was incredible, getting on base in all three of his plate appearances with three runs, one triple, and one RBI. That triple was his first of the season. Cody Fries was another key player, getting on base in two of his three plate appearances with three runs and two RBI.
Woodland Park always had someone on base and finished the game having posted an OBP of .645. They easily outclassed their opponents in that department as Florence only posted an OBP of .375.
Woodland Park's victory was their eighth straight at home, which pushed their record up to 13-2. The home wins came thanks in part to their pitching effort, having only surrendered 1.9 runs on average over those games. As for Colorado Springs Christian, their victory bumped their record up to 5-10.
Thursday's matchup will be a test for both teams' pitchers. Colorado Springs Christian hasn't had any issues making contact this season, having earned a batting average of .331. However, it's not like Woodland Park struggles in that department as they've averaged .343. With both teams so capable at the plate, fans should be ready for an impressive hitting performance.
Colorado Springs Christian might still be hurting after the 12-1 loss they got from Woodland Park in their previous meeting back in March. Can the Lions avenge their defeat or is history doomed to repeat itself? We'll find out soon enough.
