The Portal Panthers came tearing into Saturday's matchup with five straight wins (a stretch where they outscored their opponents by an average of 21.2 points) and they left with even more momentum. They breezed by Screven County at home to the tune of 84-31. With Portal ahead 46-15 at the half, the matchup was all but over already.
Multiple players turned in solid performances to lead Portal to victory, but perhaps none more so than Joseph Thomas, who scored 25 points along with six rebounds and two steals. Brian McQueen was another key contributor, scoring 20 points along with five rebounds and two steals.
Despite the loss, Screven County saw an underclassman step up: Brennen Fountain scored 16 points.
Portal pushed their record up to 17-1 with that victory, which was their 22nd straight at home. Those good results were due in large part to their offensive dominance across that stretch, as they averaged 71.0 points per game. As for Screven County, they have not been sharp recently, as they've lost ten of their last 11 matches, which put a noticeable dent in their 3-12 record this season.
Portal and Montgomery County will face off at 7:30 p.m. on January 23rd without much rest after finishing up games yesterday. Montgomery County will have to bring their A-game into this one, as they are staring down a pretty big deficit in the MaxPreps Georgia Rankings (they are ranked 448th, while Portal is ranked 35th). Screven County will be staying on the road on Tuesday to face off against Emanuel County Institute at 7:30 p.m. on January 23rd.
