The Gamble Montessori Gators will head out to challenge the St. Bernard-Elmwood Place Titans at 5:00 p.m. on Wednesday. Expect the scorekeeper to be kept busy: if their previous games are any indication, these teams will really light up the scoreboard.
Gamble Montessori took a loss when they played away from home on Saturday, but their home fans gave them all the motivation they needed on Monday. They were the clear victors by an 18-6 margin over Spencer Center. The Gators' hitters stepped up their game for this one, as that was the most runs they've scored all season.
Meanwhile, St. Bernard-Elmwood Place never let their opponents score on Monday. They put the hurt on Stivers School for the Arts with a sharp 30-0 win. The result was nothing new for the Titans, who have now won seven matches by ten runs or more so far this season.
Keenan Derrenkamp made a splash while hitting and pitching. He tossed one inning while giving up no earned runs off one hit. Derrenkamp was also solid in the batter's box, getting on base in three of his four plate appearances with four runs, one triple, and one stolen base. Those four runs gave him a new career-high.
In other pitching news, Evan Hovenga looked comfortable as he tossed one inning while giving up no earned runs or hits.
Back at the plate, St. Bernard-Elmwood Place got a massive performance out of Jason Helphinstein, who went a perfect 4-for-4 with one home run, five RBI, and three runs. Those five RBI gave Helphinstein a new career-high. The team also got some help courtesy of Aiden Rack, who went 3-for-4 with four runs, two stolen bases, and four RBI.
St. Bernard-Elmwood Place was getting hits left and right and finished the game having posted a batting average of .654. That's the best batting average they've posted all season.
St. Bernard-Elmwood Place has been performing well recently as they've won four of their last five games. That's provided a nice bump to their 9-3 record this season. Gamble Montessori's first victory this season bumped their record up to 1-3.
