It may have taken overtime to finish the job, but the Centennial Hawks ultimately got the result they hoped for on Saturday. They sure made it a nail-biter, but they managed to escape with a 41-38 victory over Piedra Vista. The victory made it back-to-back wins for Centennial.
Multiple players turned in solid performances to lead Centennial to victory, but perhaps none more so than Elena Gonzales, who scored 15 points along with five assists. Those five assists set a new season-high mark for her. The team also got some help courtesy of Joy Hunt, who scored nine points along with eight rebounds.
Despite the loss, Piedra Vista still got an impressive performance from Tyra Holyan, who scored 11 points along with five rebounds. The matchup was Holyan's 11th in a row with at least ten points. Another player making a difference was Karen Stanley, who scored 11 points.
Centennial's win bumped their record up to 5-6. As for Piedra Vista, their loss dropped their record down to 6-5.
Centennial will be staying on the road on Tuesday to face off against Riverside at 3:00 p.m. on January 2nd. Riverside is coming into the contest hot, having won their last 16 games. Piedra Vista and Los Lunas will face off at 7:00 p.m. on January 2nd without much rest after finishing up games yesterday. The matchup should be an exciting one, as these teams are ranked near one another in New Mexico (Los Lunas is ranked 33rd, while Piedra Vista is ranked 24th).
