The Greeley West Spartans had to endure a three-game losing streak, but that streak is no more. They sure made it a nail-biter, but they managed to escape with a 53-51 win over Wheat Ridge on Monday. The victory was just what Greeley West needed coming off of a 77-39 defeat in their prior game.
Greeley West got their win on the backs of several key players, but it was Jacob Flores out in front who dropped a double-double on 14 points and 15 rebounds. Flores set a new season high mark in steals with three. The team also got some help courtesy of Andrew Zepeda, who scored 15 points along with five assists.
Wheat Ridge's loss came despite a true team effort from the offense, with many players turning in solid performances. Perhaps the best among them was Isaac Mccune, who scored 19 points along with five assists and three steals. Mccune has been hot recently, having posted two or more steals the last six times he's played. Another player making a difference was Nick Dalton, who scored ten points along with five blocks and three steals.
Even though they lost, Wheat Ridge were smashing the offensive glass and finished the game with 12 offensive rebounds. They easily outclassed their opponents in that department as Greeley West only pulled down 19 offensive rebounds.
Greeley West's victory bumped their record up to 2-8. As for Wheat Ridge, they are on a three-game losing streak that has dropped them down to 2-8.
Both teams will have to hit the road in their upcoming games. Greeley West will square off against Mead at 7:00 p.m. on Wednesday. The timing is sure in Mead's favor as the squad sits on four straight wins at home while Greeley West has been banged up by five consecutive losses on the road dating back to last season. As for Wheat Ridge, they will take on Pomona at 7:30 p.m. on Wednesday. Hopefully Pomona focused on turnovers this week since the team gave up 15 on Friday.
