The Douglas County Huskies waltzed into their game on Monday with four straight wins but they left with five. They escaped with a win against Evergreen by the margin of a single free throw, 36-35. That result was just more of the same for these two, as Douglas County also won the last time the pair played back in January of 2023.
Douglas County's success was the result of a balanced attack that saw several players step up, but Sofia Baldessari led the charge by scoring 13 points along with eight rebounds and four blocks. That makes it seven consecutive games in which Baldessari has scored at least a third of Douglas County's points. Delaney Whitaker was another key contributor, scoring 12 points along with five rebounds and three steals.
Despite the loss, Evergreen still got an impressive performance from Addison McEvers, who scored 16 points along with five steals. Another player making a difference was Taylor Bailey, who scored four points along with five assists and two steals.
Douglas County is on a roll lately: they've won six of their last seven contests, which provided a nice bump to their 8-4 record this season. As for Evergreen, their defeat ended a five-game streak of away wins and brought them to 7-2.
Douglas County won't have much time to rest: their next game is against Vista Ridge at 7:00 p.m. on January 9th. Vista Ridge is on a four-game streak of home wins, Douglas County a three-game streak of away wins -- so someone will have to leave a streak behind on the court. Evergreen will take on D'Evelyn at 6:00 p.m. on Wednesday. D'Evelyn presents a significant challenge as they come into the match much higher ranked than Evergreen in Colorado (D'Evelyn is ranked eighth, while Evergreen is ranked 50th).
