The Gaither Cowboys managed to keep up with the Coral Gables Cavaliers until halftime on Friday, but things quickly went downhill from there. Gaither's rough 67-45 defeat to Coral Gables might stick with them for a while. While losing is never fun, Gaither can't take it too hard given the team's big disadvantage in MaxPreps' Florida basketball rankings (they are ranked 354th, while Coral Gables is ranked 107th).
Gaither's loss came despite a true team effort from the offense, with many players turning in solid performances. Perhaps the best among them was Marc Fransberg, who scored 15 points. Another player making a difference was Jayce Humphries, who scored 11 points.
Marcellis Williams was his usual excellent self, scoring 24 points along with six rebounds and five steals for Coral Gables. Those five steals set a new season-high mark for him. Bruno Sanchez was another key contributor, scoring 15 points along with six assists and three steals.
This is the second loss in a row for Gaither and nudges their season record down to 5-8. As for Coral Gables, they are on a roll lately: they've won five of their last six matches, which provided a nice bump to their 11-3 record this season.
Gaither is on the road again on Monday and play against Gulf at 7:30 p.m. on January 8th. Gulf is coming into the match on a five-game losing streak. Coral Gables and Miami will face off at 7:30 p.m. on January 9th without much rest after finishing up games yesterday.
