The Gulf Buccaneers's recent rough patch got a bit rougher on Thursday after their sixth straight loss. They fell to Mitchell 54-49. The result was an unpleasant reminder to Gulf of the 50-38 defeat they experienced in the two teams' previous head-to-head fixture back in December of 2022.
Gulf's loss came despite strong showings from Ariana Rodriguez and Brenniyah Hall. Rodriguez dropped a double-double on 18 points and 23 rebounds, while Hall scored 15 points along with five rebounds and five steals. Hall is absolutely dominating the steal category: she's posted at least two every time she's taken the court this season.
Mitchell's success was the result of a balanced attack that saw several players step up, but Priya Jacob led the charge by dropping a double-double on 18 points and 11 rebounds. Jacob hasn't dropped below eight rebounds for 13 straight games. Brianna Coure was another key contributor, dropping a double-double on 13 points and 12 steals.
Gulf bumped their record down to 6-8 with that loss, which was their fifth straight on the road. As for Mitchell, they are on a roll lately: they've won three of their last four games, which provided a nice bump to their 10-5 record this season.
Gulf won't have much time to rest: their next match is against Robinson at 7:30 p.m. on January 12th. Hopefully Robinson focused on turnovers this week since the team gave up six last Wednesday. As for Mitchell, they will head out on the road to challenge River Ridge at 2:00 p.m. on Saturday. River Ridge will be looking to extend their current four-game winning streak.
