Lewis County and Rowan County are an even 5-5 against one another since April of 2017, but likely not for long. The Lions will be playing at home against the Vikings at 6:00 p.m. on Thursday. Lewis County is strutting in with some hitting muscle as they've averaged 6.4 runs per game this season.
Lewis County is coming in off a wild two-game stretch: after soaring to 12 runs on Monday, they were much more limited against Lawrence County on Tuesday. They fell 7-2 to the Bulldogs. The Lions' loss signaled the end of their three-game winning streak.
Jerra Lucas was huge no matter where she played even without the win. On the mound, she pitched seven innings while giving up three earned (and four unearned) runs off seven hits. Lucas was also big at the plate, going 1-for-3 with one stolen base, one run, and one double.
Lucas wasn't the only one making solid contact as three players wound up with at least one hit. One of them was Myla Clark, who went 1-for-3 with two stolen bases and one run.
Meanwhile, Rowan County had already won 14 in a row (a stretch where they outscored their opponents by an average of 7.2 runs) and they went ahead and made it 15 on Tuesday. They never let the Wildcats get on the board and left with a 10-0 victory. The result was nothing new for the Vikings, who have now won nine matchups by six runs or more so far this season.
Like Lewis County, Rowan County also got a great game from a two-way player: Kassi Perkins. She didn't allow a single earned run over six innings pitched. Perkins has been nothing but reliable on the mound: she hasn't given up a single earned run in five consecutive appearances. She was also solid in the batter's box, going 2-for-4 with three RBI and one double. That's the most RBI she has posted since back in March.
In other batting news, the team relied heavily on Lauryn Eastham, who went 2-for-4 with one home run and six RBI. That's the most RBI she has posted since back in March. Another player making a difference was Malana Hamm, who went a perfect 3-for-3 with three runs.
Rowan County was getting hits left and right and finished the game having posted a batting average of .464. That was just more of the same: they've now posted a batting average of .348 or higher in seven consecutive contests.
Rowan County pushed their record up to 16-3 with the win, which was their eighth straight at home dating back to last season. The home victories came thanks in part to their hitting performance across that stretch, as they averaged 9.3 runs over those games. As for Lewis County, their defeat dropped their record down to 12-11.
Both Lewis County and Rowan County just can't seem to miss. The Lions have been making plenty of contact this season, having averaged 9.3 hits per game. However, it's not like Rowan County struggles in that department as they've been averaging only 4.9 hits. With both teams so capable at the plate, fans should be ready for an impressive hitting performance.
Lewis County suffered a grim 9-0 defeat to Rowan County when the teams last played back in March. Will the Lions have more luck at home instead of on the road? Check back here after the action for a full breakdown and analysis of the contest.
