The Badger Braves waltzed into their game Saturday with nine straight wins but they left with ten. They walked away with a 53-44 win over Garfield. Given Badger's advantage in MaxPreps' Ohio basketball rankings (they are ranked 234th, while Garfield is ranked 700th), the result wasn't entirely unexpected.
It was another big night for Katie Grexa, who dropped a double-double on 17 points and ten rebounds. The matchup was her seventh in a row with at least ten points. Another player making a difference was Hannah Betts, who scored 11 points.
Despite the defeat, Garfield saw an underclassman step up: Mandy Cardinal scored 18 points along with nine rebounds and three blocks. Those three blocks set a new season-high mark for her. The team also got some help courtesy of Kolby Fresch, who scored six points.
Even though they lost, Garfield were working as a unit and finished the game with 13 assists. That's the most assists they've managed all season.
Badger pushed their record up to 10-1 with that win, which was their sixth straight on the road. As for Garfield, they are on a five-game losing streak that has dropped them down to 1-9.
Both teams are looking forward to the support of their home crowds in their upcoming games. Badger will take on St. John at 5:30 p.m. on Monday. That game will pit two of the most dominant players against one another: alyssa cevera and Grexa. As for Garfield, they will play host again and welcome Brookfield, where tip off is scheduled for 7:00 p.m. on Monday.
