On Wednesday, the Lafayette Lions faced the New Iberia Yellowjackets in a battle between two of the state's top teams. Lafayette escaped with a win against New Iberia by the margin of a single free throw, 35-34. The victory was nothing new for Lafayette as they're now sitting on six straight.
Several Yellowjackets players turned in solid performances, despite ultimately coming up short. Perhaps the best among those players was Kentravion Smith, who scored 12 points along with two steals. As a matter of fact, that's the most points Smith has scored all season. Another player making a difference was Otis Anderson, who scored 13 points.
Lafayette is on a roll lately: they've won 11 of their last 12 matchups, which provided a nice bump to their 17-2 record this season. As for New Iberia, their defeat dropped their record down to 19-4.
Both teams will have to hit the road in their upcoming games. Lafayette will take on Sam Houston at 7:00 p.m. on Tuesday. Sam Houston will have to bring their A-game into this one, as they are staring down a pretty big deficit in the MaxPreps Louisiana Rankings (they are ranked 97th, while Lafayette is ranked 15th). As for New Iberia, they will head out on the road to take on Lafayette Christian Academy at 7:00 p.m. on Tuesday.
