Cape Coral and Gateway are an even 2-2-2 against one another since February of 2023, but likely not for long. The Cape Coral Seahawks will challenge the Gateway Eagles at 7:00 p.m. on Monday. Both squads will be entering this one on the heels of a big victory.
Having struggled with seven defeats in a row, Cape Coral turned things around against East Lee County on Friday. They put the hurt on the Jaguars with a sharp 11-3 win. The Seahawks not only won on Friday, but they posted their biggest win since February 18th.
Moses Castellanos tossed a big game, striking out six batters over five innings while giving up just two earned runs off three hits.
At the plate, the team relied heavily on Derek Hooker, who scored three runs and stole a base while going 2-for-2. That's the most runs he has posted since back in February. Collin Thess was another key player, going 3-for-4 with three RBI and two doubles.
Cape Coral was getting hits left and right and finished the game having posted a batting average of .379. They easily outclassed their opponents in that department as East Lee County only posted a batting average of .160.
Meanwhile, Gateway entered their tilt with Oasis on Friday with four consecutive wins , and they'll enter their next game with five. They were the clear victor by a 15-5 margin over the Sharks.
Gateway also got a great performance from Hunter Squire as he struck out six batters over five innings while giving up five earned runs off five hits. Squire has been consistent recently: he hasn't tossed less than five strikeouts in three consecutive appearances.
On the hitting side, Juan Carlos Lineras was incredible, getting on base in all four of his plate appearances with three runs, one triple, and one RBI. Another player making a difference was Brady Miller, who scored three runs while getting on base in three of his four plate appearances.
Gateway pushed their record up to 8-3 with the victory, which was their fourth straight at home. The wins came thanks in part to their pitching effort, having only surrendered 3.8 runs on average over those games. As for Cape Coral, their record now sits at 4-7.
Cape Coral took their win against Gateway in their previous meeting back in April of 2024 by a conclusive 14-4. Will Cape Coral repeat their success, or does Gateway have a new game plan this time around? We'll find out soon enough.
