Willow Spring was handed a 11-run defeat in their previous outing, but that didn't affect their clutch gene on Monday. They skirted past Apex Friendship 4-2. The win was some much needed relief for the Storm as it spelled an end to their six-game losing streak.
Savannah Callis spent all seven innings on the mound, and it's clear why: she surrendered two runs (both of which were unearned) on six hits and racked up nine Ks. She has been consistent recently: she hasn't tossed less than five strikeouts in three consecutive appearances.
At the plate, Willow Spring got a massive performance out of Abby Howard, who went 2-for-3 with two stolen bases, one run, and one double. That's the most stolen bases Howard has posted since back in March. Another player making a difference was Lynlee Ogburn, who went 2-for-4 with one stolen base, two RBI, and one run.
Willow Spring hit smart and finished the game with only one strikeout. The team has now struck out at least three batters in three consecutive contests.
Meanwhile, South Garner was not able to break out of their rough patch on Monday as the team picked up their fourth straight loss. They lost 15-0 to Fuquay - Varina.
The victory got Willow Spring back to even at 8-8. As for South Garner, their defeat dropped their record down to 1-12.
South Garner's pitching crew has a crucial task ahead of them: Willow Spring has hit smart this season, having averaged an OBP of .434. It's a different story for South Garner, though, as they've only averaged .295. Will they be able to contain Willow Spring's hitters?
Everything went Willow Spring's way against South Garner in their previous meeting back in March, as Willow Spring made off with an 18-0 win. The rematch might be a little tougher for the Storm since the team won't have the home-field advantage this time around. We'll see if the change in venue makes a difference.
