Each year since 2006, MaxPreps has recognized outstanding performers in high school football. America's source for high school sports continues the tradition to close out the 2023 season by naming the top player in each state. Selections are based on team success and individual excellence in addition to local and state accolades.
Jack McCoy of
Burr & Burton (Manchester) is the 2023 MaxPreps Vermont High School Football Player of the Year. The 5-foot-10, 185-pound senior quarterback led the Bulldogs to a 10-1 record and Division I state title, the school's first since 2019.
In a 35-28 win over Hartford (White River Junction) in the state championship McCoy completed 7 of 12 passes for 178 yards and four touchdowns to go with 32 carries for 134 yards and another score. Hartford won the regular season matchup between the two teams 43-7 in September.
McCoy finished the season with 2,055 yards passing and 29 touchdowns to go with 1,167 yards rushing and 18 more scores. He completed over 65 percent of his passes.
During a 48-21 win over St. Johnsbury Academy in September, McCoy ran 12 times for 187 yards and broke the school record with six rushing touchdowns. A week prior he led the Bulldogs to a 35-7 win over Middlebury by accounting for 351 yards of total offense and five touchdowns.
