Cardinal Gibbons is 8-2 against Broughton since April of 2019 and they'll have a chance to extend that dominance on Tuesday. The Crusaders will square off against the Capitals at 3:00 p.m. Keep an eye on the score for this one: the two teams posted some lofty run totals in their previous games.
Broughton will challenge a team with plenty of momentum: Cardinal Gibbons extended their winning streak to three on Thursday. The Crusaders came out on top against North Raleigh Christian Academy by a score of 11-8.
Sophie Cygnarowicz made a big impact while hitting and pitching. She tossed two innings while giving up no earned runs off one hit. Cygnarowicz was also big at the plate, scoring two runs while going 1-for-1.
In other batting news, Cardinal Gibbons got a massive performance out of Talia Marinaro, who fired off two home runs, five RBI, and three runs while going 3-for-3. Marinaro also hit a double, marking her first of the season. Mallory Kelly was another key player, going 3-for-4 with one home run, three runs, and two doubles.
Cardinal Gibbons kept the outfield on their toes and finished the game with 13 hits. They are a perfect 5-0 when they post 11 or more hits.
Broughton hadn't beaten Sanderson on the road since April 4, 2022 but that history sure didn't bother them last Thursday. The Capitals were the clear victors by a 15-2 margin over the Spartans. The Capitals might be getting used to big wins seeing as the team has won six games by ten runs or more this season.
Adeline Gambrell looked comfortable as she pitched one inning while giving up no earned runs or hits.
On the hitting side, Broughton let Lucy Bertram and Harper Smith run wild. Bertram went 2-for-4 with one home run, two stolen bases, and four RBI, while Smith went 2-for-3 with one home run, three RBI, and two runs. Those three RBI gave Smith a new career-high. Another player making a difference was Daphne Hall, who scored two runs and stole a base while going 1-for-3.
The win made it two in a row for Broughton and bumps their season record up to 7-4. Those victories came thanks in part to their pitching effort, having only surrendered a grand total of 2 run in those games. As for Cardinal Gibbons, their record is now 6-4.
Fans could be in store for some top-tier slugging on Tuesday. Cardinal Gibbons hasn't had any problems when it comes to power this season, having averaged 1 home runs per game. However, it's not like Broughton struggles in that department as they've been averaging an even more impressive 1.5 home runs. With so much power on both teams, it'll be down to the pitchers to keep the mound locked down.
Cardinal Gibbons couldn't quite finish off Broughton in their previous matchup back in April of 2024 and fell 9-7. Can the Crusaders avenge their loss or is history doomed to repeat itself? We'll find out soon enough.
