Conant is a perfect 8-0 against Wheeling since May of 2015 and they'll have a chance to extend that dominance on Wednesday. The Cougars will host the Wildcats at 4:45 p.m. The timing is sure in Conant's favor as the team sits on four straight wins at home while Wheeling has been banged up by five consecutive losses on the road.
On Monday, Conant sure made it a nail-biter, but they managed to escape with a 3-1 victory over Elk Grove.
Dani Gemmell spent all seven innings on the mound, and it's clear why: she surrendered only one earned run on four hits and racked up ten Ks. She has been consistent: she hasn't given up more than two walks in five consecutive appearances.
At the plate, Jenny Ryan was excellent, going 2-for-3 with two doubles, one run, and one RBI. Those two doubles gave her a new career-high. The team also got some help courtesy of Charlotte Wolf, who went 1-for-3 with one stolen base, one run, and one double.
Meanwhile, Wheeling started off well but failed to capitalize on an early lead against Schaumburg. They fell 8-4 to the Saxons on Monday.
Wheeling saw six different players step up and record at least one hit. One of them was Mia Smith, who went 1-for-2 with one run, one double, and one RBI. Alaina Costello was another, going 2-for-4 with one run and one double.
Wheeling's defeat dropped their record down to 5-12. As for Conant, their win ended a three-game drought on the road and puts them at 9-6.
Wheeling's hitters will have their work cut out for them on Wednesday. Conant has been retiring batters left and right this season, having averaged 6.9 strikeouts per game. It's a different story for Wheeling, though, as they've been averaging only 3.5 strikeouts. Will Conant keep running through batters, or will the Wildcats buck the trend?
Conant took their victory against Wheeling in their previous matchup back in April of 2024 by a conclusive 14-3 score. Do the Cougars have another victory up their sleeve, or will the Wildcats turn the tables on them? We'll have the answer soon enough.
