Even though the Maine East Blue Demons have not done well against the Vernon Hills Cougars recently (they were 0-9 in their previous nine matchups), they didn't let the past get in their way on Friday. Maine East snuck past the Cougars with a 48-43 victory. The win made it back-to-back wins for Maine East.
Maine East found their leader in underclassman Arabella Silva, who scored 31 points along with six rebounds and three steals. As a matter of fact, that's the most points Silva has scored all season. Maria Gonzalez was another key contributor, scoring four points.
The win got Maine East back to even at 13-13. As for Vernon Hills, they dropped their record down to 9-19 with that loss, which was their third straight at home.
Maine East will head out on the road to square off against the Trevians at 6:30 p.m. on Tuesday. New Trier presents a significant challenge as they come into the match much higher ranked than the Blue Demons in Illinois (the Trevians are ranked 81st, while the Blue Demons are ranked 373rd). As for Vernon Hills, they won't have much time to rest: their next match is against the Wildcats at 1:00 p.m. on February 3rd. Wheeling has now lost 11 straight, and the team is hunting for their first win since December 19.
