The Pontotoc Warriors will venture away from home to square off against the Lafayette Commodores at 6:30 p.m. on Tuesday. Pontotoc is strutting in with some hitting muscle as they've averaged 7.4 runs per game this season.
Pontotoc is coming in fresh off a high-stakes matchup with another one of Mississippi's top teams: Itawamba Agricultural, who was ranked 16th at the time (Pontotoc was ranked 18th). Pontotoc fell just short of Itawamba Agricultural by a score of 6-4 on Friday. That makes it the first time this season the Warriors have let down their home crowd.
Olivia Galloway was huge no matter where she played even without the win. She looked comfortable on the mound, not allowing a single earned run over five innings pitched. She has been nothing but reliable: she hasn't tossed less than five strikeouts in three consecutive appearances. She was also big at the plate, scoring a run while going 2-for-3.
In other batting news, Madi Collums made the most of her time at bat despite the final result and went 2-for-3 with one home run and two RBI. That home run marked the first that she launched this season. Emarie Boddie was another key player, scoring a run and stealing a base while going 1-for-3.
Even though they lost, Pontotoc hit smart and finished the game with only two strikeouts. That strong performance was nothing new for the team: they've now struck out at most four strikeouts in six consecutive matches.
Meanwhile, Lafayette hadn't done well against Corinth recently (they were 1-6 in their previous seven matchups), but they didn't let the past get in their way on Thursday. Lafayette blew past Corinth 10-3. The result was nothing new for the Commodores, who have now won 16 contests by seven runs or more so far this season.
Like Pontotoc, Lafayette also got a great game from a two-way player: Mabry Eason. She struck out six batters over seven innings while giving up just two earned (and one unearned) runs off three hits (and only one walk). Eason was also stellar in the batter's box, scoring two runs and stealing two bases while going 3-for-3. That's the most stolen bases she has posted since March 1st.
In other batting news, Braleigh Crowe was incredible, going 2-for-4 with one home run and five RBI. Another player making a difference was Mary Madison Kelley, who got on base in all four of her plate appearances with one RBI.
Lafayette is on a roll lately: they've won ten of their last 11 games. That's provided a nice bump to their 17-4 record this season. Those victories came thanks in part to their hitting performance across that stretch, as they averaged 12.3 runs over those games. Pontotoc suffered their first home loss, dropping their record down to 11-4.
Both Pontotoc and Lafayette just can't seem to miss. Pontotoc has been making plenty of contact this season, having averaged 9 hits per game. However, it's not like Lafayette struggles in that department as they've been averaging only 3.8 hits. With both teams so capable at the plate, fans should be ready for an impressive hitting performance.
Pontotoc came out on top in a nail-biter against Lafayette in their previous matchup back in April of 2024, sneaking past 9-8. The rematch might be a little tougher for Pontotoc since the squad won't have the home-field advantage this time around. We'll see if the change in venue makes a difference.
