Athens won against Vinton County last Monday with 62 points and they decided to stick to that point total again on Thursday. Everything went the Athens Bulldogs' way against the Nelsonville-York Buckeyes as the Athens Bulldogs made off with a 62-40 victory. The Bulldogs have made a habit of sweeping their opponents off the court, having now won 13 matches by 22 points or more this season.
Athens' success was the result of a balanced attack that saw several players step up, but Asa Holcombe led the charge by dropping a double-double on 13 points and ten boards. The team also got some help courtesy of Alexis Koopal, who almost dropped a double-double on 14 points and nine rebounds.
Athens smashed the offensive glass and finished the game with 20 offensive rebounds. The team's really been improving in that area: they've now improved their offensive rebound total in three consecutive games.
Nelsonville-York's loss came despite a true team effort with many players turning in solid performances. Perhaps the best among them was Alayna Okulich, who dropped a double-double on 11 points and 12 boards. Okulich has been hot recently, having also posted two or more blocks the last four times she's played. Madi Pidcock was another key player, going 6 for 11 en route to 15 points.
Athens pushed their record up to 17-4 with the win, which was their fifth straight at home. The wins came thanks in part to their defensive effort, having only surrendered 28.6 points over those games. As for Nelsonville-York, they are on a three-game losing streak that has dropped them down to 7-15.
Looking ahead, Athens will host Circleville at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday. Athens knows how to get points on the board -- the squad has finished with 55 points or more in their past three contests -- so hopefully Circleville likes a good challenge. As for Nelsonville-York, they will head out to take on Ripley-Union-Lewis-Huntington at 7:00 p.m. on Thursday.
