The Sandia Matadors will look to defend their home field on Thursday against the Cibola Cougars at 7:00 p.m. Having both just faced considerable losses, both teams are looking to turn things around.
Last Friday, Sandia faced La Cueva in a battle between two of the state's top teams. Sandia was outmatched by La Cueva on the road and fell 51-0. Sandia's loss signaled the end of their four-game winning streak.
Meanwhile, this season hasn't been kind to Cibola, who are still winless after their ninth matchup. They were beaten by Cleveland 61-7 on Friday. While losing is never fun, Cibola can't take it too hard given the team's big disadvantage in MaxPreps' New Mexico football rankings (they are ranked 47th, while Cleveland is ranked third).
Sandia's defeat dropped their record down to 7-2. As for Cibola, their loss was their ninth straight on the road, which dropped their overall record down to 0-9.
Sandia didn't have too much breathing room in their matchup against Cibola in their previous meeting back in October of 2022, but they still walked away with a 40-34 win. Will Sandia repeat their success, or does Cibola have a new game plan this time around? We'll find out soon enough.
