5A District 3 recap October 22, 2013
Gadsden's Steven Herrera recorded the longest rushing play in 5A District 3 this season in his game against Onate last week. Herrera's team beat the Knights as he sprinted for 90 yards on the play and finished with 105 in all.
Adding to the longest winning streak in the league this week, Las Cruces beat Alamogordo 50-0. The win marks eighth in a row for the the BULLDAWGS.
Gadsden's offense was tough to stop this week, as it produced the league's top passer, rusher and receiver. Herrera threw for 262 and 1 touchdown and Daniel Contreras had 114 yards receiving. On the ground Ramon Martinez chipped in 152 yards. Frank Jauregui helped Gadsden's passing attack out by catching 5 balls for 87 yards.
Martinez was the best running back in the league this week. He ran for 152 yards on 20 carries as roy gerela's team topped Onate. Teammate Jauregui added to the ground attack by rushing for 102 yards.
Gadsden's offense has been unstoppable this season and the Panthers feature the season leaders in passing, rushing and receiving yards. Herrera has thrown for 794 yards and 6 touchdowns this season, while Contreras has 28 catches for 269 yards.
A big matchup in 5A District 3 this week will be when Caleb Hull's team takes on Mayfield. At the moment, the Knights are in fourth, while the Trojans are in second.
Las Cruces took down the Tigers 50-0 last week, the largest margin of any game.
