Even though the Jefferson Panthers have not done well against the Sweet Grass County Sheepherders recently (they were 1-8 in their previous nine matchups), they didn't let the past get in their way on Saturday. Jefferson narrowly escaped with a win as the team sidled past Sweet Grass County 46-44. This was payback for Jefferson, who suffered a 64-44 defeat the last time these two teams met.
Multiple players turned in solid performances to lead Jefferson to victory, but perhaps none more so than MacKenzie Layng, who scored 21 points. That makes it two consecutive games in which Layng has scored at least 25% of Jefferson's points. Ryian Eveland was another key contributor, scoring 9 points along with 9 rebounds and 3 blocks.
The win got Jefferson back to even at 1-1. As for Sweet Grass County, their loss dropped their record down to 2-1.
Jefferson will look to defend their home court on Thursday against Three Forks at 6:00 p.m. Sweet Grass County will get a bit of extra time to process the loss as their next game is a ways off. They'll take on Joliet at 6:00 p.m. on January 5, 2024.
