Softball Recap: Prescott Comes Up Short

Prescott extended their losing streak to seven on Friday, dropping their season record down to 5-16 in the process. They were a single run away from ending the streak, but they lost a 5-4 heartbreaker at the hands of the Mohave Thunderbirds. Unfortunately, that's the second time they've come up short against the Thunderbirds this season, as they also lost their prior matchup 11-1 back in March.

Gracie Pereira was huge no matter where she played even without the win. She looked comfortable on the mound, pitching seven innings while giving up just one earned (and four unearned) runs off five hits. She has been nothing but reliable: she hasn't given up more than two walks in three consecutive appearances. She was also stellar in the batter's box, going 2-for-3 with one home run, one stolen base, and two RBI.

Pereira wasn't the only one making solid contact as three players wound up with at least one hit. One of them was Mariah Smolnikar, who went 1-for-3 with two runs.

As for Mohave, the win made it two in a row for them and bumps their season record up to 13-10. Those victories came thanks in part to their pitching effort, having only surrendered a grand total of 6 runs in those games.

Like Prescott, Mohave also got a great game from a two-way player: Rilynn Bragg. She struck out ten batters over seven innings while giving up just two earned (and two unearned) runs off three hits. With that strong performance, Bragg is now averaging an impressive 5.1 strikeouts per game. She was also big at the plate, going 2-for-4 with two RBI and one run.

Prescott is taking a road trip to square off against Deer Valley at 3:45 p.m. on Monday. The Skyhawks' pitching crew has only allowed 2.3 runs per game this season, so the Badgers' hitters will have their work cut out for them. As for Mohave, they have already played their next matchup, a 13-2 win against Bradshaw Mountain on the 26th.
