Basketball Recap: Rangely Takes a Loss

It was a proper cat-fight when Rangely faced off against Grand Valley on Saturday. The Rangely Panthers lost 64-41 to the Grand Valley Cardinals. The result was an unpleasant reminder to the Panthers of the 53-47 loss they experienced in the pair's previous head-to-head fixture back in February of 2021.

Despite the loss, Rangely still got an impressive performance from Marcos Quintana, who went 6-for-13 to rack up 13 points in addition to six rebounds and four steals. The team also got some help courtesy of Clay Allred, who posted seven points along with eight boards and five assists.

Even though they lost, Rangely was working as a unit and finished the game with 14 assists. The team's really been improving in that area: they've now improved their assist total in three consecutive games.

Grand Valley was led to victory by Porter Ostermiller and Daniel Gronewoller. Ostermiller dropped a double-double with 22 points and 17 rebounds, while Gronewoller dropped a double-double with 14 points and ten boards. Ostermiller has become a key player for Grand Valley: the team is undefeated when he posts at least 15 points, but 8-10 otherwise. Tyler Palcer also deserves some recognition as he pulled down his first board of the season.

Rangely has been struggling recently as they've lost eight of their last ten matches. That's put a noticeable dent in their 7-14 record this season. The victory was the fifth in a row for Grand Valley, bringing their record for this year to 11-10.

Looking ahead, Rangely will take on Cotopaxi in a tournament on Friday. Rangely has given up an average of 51.4 points per game this season, so hopefully the team got some defensive drills in this week. As for Grand Valley, they will head out to face off against Roaring Fork at 7:00 p.m. on Thursday. Roaring Fork is strutting in with some offensive muscle as they've averaged 59.5 points per game this season.
