MERCED, Calif. - After two lead changes,
Merced (Calif.) took the lead for good when it scored a touchdown with under a minute left in the fifth quarter and held on to beat
Golden Valley (Merced, Calif.) 14-13 on Saturday.
The Bears' most effective player was
Eli Gutierrez. The senior quarterback ran for one touchdown and kicked one extra point. He has now scored five touchdowns on the season.
Andre Bodiker played well for the Cougars. The senior wide receiver caught one touchdown.
Merced came in allowing an average of 29.1 points per game this season. MHS held firm on the defensive front, and kept Golden Valley right around the 13.0 points it had been averaging per game.
A 40-33 Merced victory was the result when the squads faced off last season.
With the win Merced extended its winning streak to three games.
