After flying high against the Providence Hall Patriots last Thursday, the Layton Christian Academy Eagles came back down to earth. Layton Christian Academy took a 35-30 hit to the loss column at the hands of Summit Academy. The defeat unfortunately continues a disappointing trend for Layton Christian Academy in their matchups with Summit Academy: they've now lost five in a row.
Layton Christian Academy's loss shouldn't obscure the performances of Ava Smith, who scored 12 points along with eight rebounds and four blocks, and Asmin Tanhan who scored six points along with seven rebounds and six steals. Tanhan hasn't dropped below two steals for six straight games. Sofia Saez was another key contributor, scoring four points along with five rebounds.
Even though they lost, Layton Christian Academy smashed the offensive glass and finished the game with 13 offensive rebounds. They easily outclassed their opponents in that department as Summit Academy only pulled down five offensive rebounds.
Leading Summit Academy to victory were Destinee Flores and Avery Backus. Flores scored 13 points along with six rebounds, while Backus scored 14 points along with four steals. Backus is absolutely dominating the steal category: she's posted at least two every time she's taken the court this season. Another player making a difference was Regan Georgeson, who scored two points along with five rebounds and two steals.
Layton Christian Academy now has a losing record at 8-9. As for Summit Academy, they are on a roll lately: they've won five of their last six games, which provided a nice bump to their 12-6 record this season.
Both squads will have to hit the road in their upcoming games. Layton Christian Academy will face off against Judge Memorial Catholic at 7:00 p.m. on Tuesday. Hopefully Judge Memorial Catholic focused on turnovers this week since the team gave up 14 on Thursday. As for Summit Academy, they will head out on the road to challenge Providence Hall at 7:00 p.m. on Thursday.
