The Kosciusko Whippets will head out on the road to square off against the Leflore County Tigers at 6:00 p.m. on Thursday. Kosciusko is coming into the game hot, having won their last seven games.
Last Tuesday, everything came up roses for Kosciusko against West Lowndes as the squad secured a 55-17 victory. The Whippets have made a habit of sweeping their opponents off the court, having now won seven contests by 23 points or more this season.
Kosciusko got their win on the backs of several key players, but it was Kaleysha Miller out in front who dropped a double-double on ten points and ten boards. Another player making a difference was Journey Harris, who posted ten points.
Kosciusko smashed the offensive glass and finished the game with 25 offensive boards. That strong performance was nothing new for the team: they've now pulled down at least ten offensive rebounds in ten consecutive matchups.
Meanwhile, Leflore County hadn't done well against Shaw recently (they were 0-6 in their previous six matchups), but they didn't let the past get in their way on Tuesday. Leflore County skirted past Shaw 35-32. For those keeping track at home, that's the closest victory the Tigers have posted since December 11, 2023.
Leflore County found their leader in sophomore Malia Dixon, who went 6 of 11 on her way to 14 points and five steals. That makes it five consecutive games in which Dixon has scored at least a third of Leflore County's points. The team also got some help courtesy of Makiyzah Sims, who had three points and six rebounds.
Kosciusko is on a roll lately: they've won nine of their last ten games, which provided a nice bump to their 12-2 record this season. The wins came thanks to their offensive performance across that stretch, as they averaged 51.4 points per game. As for Leflore County, the win made it two in a row for them and bumps their season record up to 8-5.
Rebounding is likely to be a big factor in this contest: Kosciusko has been smashing the glass this season, having averaged 33 boards per game. However, it's not like Leflore County struggles in that department as they've been averaging 22.4 rebounds. With both teams battling to corral missed shots, we'll see if one team can grab an edge.
Everything came up roses for Kosciusko against Leflore County in their previous matchup back in November of 2023, as the team secured a 50-14 victory. Will Kosciusko repeat their success, or does Leflore County have a new game plan this time around? We'll find out soon enough.
