Webster Groves continued its winning ways against Suburban South opposition last Friday with a 71-33 trouncing of 12-6 Eureka.
The Wildcats appeared to be a worthy opponent entering the contest against the third-ranked Statesmen, who have now won 49 straight league games over the course of six seasons.
But Webster Groves was more than ready for the challenge, although they were without starting guard Mike Whittier who was on a recruiting trip. The Statesmen scored the first 12 points of the game and never looked back against the Wildcats, who were undefeated in the league going into the contest.
“Really we try to prove it every game,” guard Drew Hanlen told the St. Louis Post-Dispatch. “We have that streak and we can’t take anyone lightly. We want to keep that alive for the guys who started it.”
Hanlen led the way for Webster Groves by scoring 19 points and dishing out six assists. Zach Redel added a double-double with 17 points and 11 rebounds.
With the win, the Statesmen now hold a one-game lead over the Wildcats and University City. That makes Webster Groves Feb. 8 contest against the Lions the next real interference for the Statesmen in their quest for a seventh straight league title and an even longer league winning streak.
Missing Head Coaches
Both the Lindbergh and Marquette girls basketball teams were missing a key ingredient during their Suburban West Conference tilt last Friday. Their head coaches.
Lindbergh head coach Bill Thoele missed the key action due to the flu. His Marquette counterpart Scott Cleer didn’t make the game either because he was with his ailing father.
Lindbergh moved into a tie for the league lead with the Mustangs following its 56-47 victory. Both teams stood at 3-1 in league play following the nine-point Flyers win.
Lindbergh’s Aimee Ubriaco led the way with 18 points, and the Flyers knocked down eight free throws in the fourth period to give Lindbergh assistant coach Kevin Ahlers a win and a reason to call Thoele. The Flyers head coach had told Ahlers not to call after the game if they lost.
“The girls talked before the game and at halftime about not wanting to disappoint coach Thoele,” Ahlers told the St. Louis Post-Dispatch. “They saw how sick he was, and they wanted to lift up his spirits.”
Overtime Thriller
Jay Simmons made a 30-foot shot that Scott City coach Lance Amick called unbelievable as time was running out in regulation of the Rams 66-64 overtime thriller. Simmons was falling out of bounds with a defender in his face, but still managed to get the shot off and connect.
Simmons and Alex King led the way for the Rams by scoring 24 and 20 points, respectively. They also combined to pull down 23 rebounds.
Back-to-Back 30-Point Quarters
Notre Dame scored 31 and 30 points in the first and second periods of a 97-54 victory over Kelly. The Bulldogs out scored Kelly 61-25 in the first half, and had 87 points on the board going into the fourth period.
