II Section V recap October 8, 2013
Salpointe Catholic added to the longest winning streak in II Section V this week by beating Mountain View, 56-9. This was the team's sixth consecutive win.
Rincon made the biggest leap in the national rankings this week, rising to 12,330 from 12,425. The advance stemmed from a 50-0 victory over the Rangers last week.
Andrew Cota threw for 306 yards and 3 touchdowns. He was 17-22 with 0 interceptions.
Cota put up the best numbers in passing as Salpointe Catholic defeated the Mountain Lions. Cota's favorite target this week was Cameron Denson, who caught 7 passes for 136 yards.
Leading the league in both passing and receiving yards, Dennis Bene's team's Cota and Denson have proven to be a lethal combination. 6-1 quarterback Cota has thrown for 1,439 yards this season, while Denson has 40 catches for 831 yards. Ironwood Ridge's Jake Vartanian leads the league in rushing yards with 900.
The most important game in the league this week will be the match up between the Nighthawks and Tucson High Magnet School. Ironwood Ridge comes into the matchup ranked 16th in the state, while the Badgers ranks 23rd.
Matt Johnson's team's Vartanian is a mere 100 yards away from breaking the 1,000-rushing-yards mark for the season. In 114 carries Vartanian has accumulated 900 yard this year.
The Lancers led II Section V in scoring this week after putting up 56 points on Mountain View. Cota ran for 62 yards during the win.
