For the first time this season, La Vernia will have a chance to prove themselves in a conference matchup. After each having a week off, they and the Calhoun Sandcrabs will shake off the cobwebs and hit the field against one another at 7:00 p.m. on Friday. Each of these teams will be battling to keep a three-game winning streak alive.
La Vernia is headed into the contest after thoroughly thrashing Marble Falls: they outscored them in every quarter. Given that consistent dominance, it should come as no surprise that the Bears blew the Mustangs out of the water with a 63-21 final score. The game was pretty much decided by the half, when the score had already reached 35-14.

La Vernia can attribute much of their success to COOPER NULL, who rushed for 121 yards and a pair of scores on only nine carries, and TY CARTER, who rushed for 187 yards and three TDs while picking up 9.8 yards per carry. With that strong performance, NULL is now averaging an impressive 102.8 rushing yards per game. WYATT FRANK also helped out with an impressive 85 receiving yards.
They were just one part of a punishing run game: La Vernia was unstoppable on the ground and finished the game with 385 rushing yards. That strong performance was nothing new for the team: they've now rushed for at least 179 rushing yards in 13 consecutive matchups dating back to last season.
La Vernia didn't go easy on the quarterback and picked off two passes before the game was over. The picks came courtesy of VINCENT CAPPARELLI and MATTHEW LINDSEY. La Vernia got some further help from KOLE FARMER: he picked up two sacks and made nine total tackles (3.0 for loss).
Meanwhile, Calhoun got themselves on the board against Varsity Opponent last Friday, but Varsity Opponent never followed suit. They took their contest with ease, bagging a 29-0 win over Varsity Opponent. The score at the end of the third wound up being the final score as the Sandcrabs just coasted through the last quarter.
La Vernia's record now sits at 4-1. As for Calhoun, their record is now 2-3.
Friday's game might be decided on the ground. La Vernia has been unstoppable on the ground this season, having averaged 243.8 rushing yards per game. However, it's not like Calhoun struggles in that department as they've been averaging 178.6 rushing yards. There's a good chance Friday's matchup turns into a tough fight on the ground.
La Vernia came out on top in a nail-biter against Calhoun when the teams last played back in November of 2024, sneaking past 24-21. Do the Bears have another victory up their sleeve, or will the Sandcrabs turn the tables on them? We'll have the answer soon enough.
