The Oxford Yellow Jackets will be staying on the road on Friday to face off against the Fort Payne Wildcats at 6:00 p.m. on February 2nd. Hopefully Oxford focused on turnovers this week since the team gave up 19 on Tuesday.
Oxford lost a heartbreaker when they last took the court, but unfortunately for them the defeat they were handed on on Tuesday was a bit more commanding. They were outmatched by Spring Garden on the road and fell 66-38. While losing is never fun, Oxford can't take it too hard given the team's big disadvantage in MaxPreps' Alabama basketball rankings (they are ranked 72nd, while the Panthers are ranked 13th).
Despite the defeat, Oxford had strong showings from Ava Thomas, who scored eight points along with seven rebounds, and Xaionna Whitfield, who scored 18 points.
In what's become a running theme this season, Fort Payne gave their fans yet another huge victory on Thursday. They blew past Westminster Christian Academy, posting a 50-15 win at home.
Oxford's loss was their fifth straight on the road, which dropped their record down to 14-13. As for Fort Payne, their victory bumped their record up to 18-10.
Oxford strolled past the Wildcats in their previous matchup last Tuesday by a score of 71-52. The rematch might be a little tougher for Oxford since the team won't have the home-court advantage this time around. We'll see if the change in venue makes a difference.
