Cambridge/Salem and Stillwater are an even 3-3 against one another since November of 2019, but not for long. Cambridge/Salem will look to defend their home field on Saturday against Stillwater at 1:00 p.m. Cambridge/Salem is coming into the matchup hot, having won their last six games.
Cambridge/Salem proved they can win big last Saturday (they won by 43) and on Saturday they proved they can win the close ones too. They won a game that couldn't have been any closer, slipping by Bethlehem Central 27-26. Given Cambridge/Salem's advantage in MaxPreps' New York football rankings (they are ranked 112th, while Bethlehem Central is ranked 312th) , the result wasn't entirely unexpected.
Cambridge/Salem's win was the result of several impressive offensive performances. One of the most notable came from Kolin Rowland, who picked up 89 receiving yards and one score, and also rushed for 32 yards. Rowland showed off some serious burst, lighting up the secondary with a catch for 56 yards. Another player making a difference was Jackson Rowland, who gained 153 total yards.
Cambridge/Salem didn't go easy on the quarterback and picked off two passes before the game was over. Preston Peabody picked up that interception and then proceeded to rub salt in the wound by taking it back the other way for a touchdown. He got in on the action too, converting a pick into a touchdown.
Meanwhile, Stillwater got the win against Warrensburg/Lake George/Bolton two weeks ago by a conclusive 47-21. Considering the Warriors have won four contests by more than 25 points this season, Friday's blowout was nothing new.
Stillwater had a senior duo take command as Ryan Brown rushed for 169 yards and three touchdowns and Aidan Callanan rushed for 79 yards and a pair of TDs on only ten carries. Callanan's passing game has become a key predictor of the Warriors' success: the team is undefeated when his passer rating is 100 or higher, but only 2-3 otherwise. Caleb Vacula helped out on the ground, rushing for 81 yards.
They were just one part of a punishing run game: Stillwater was unstoppable on the ground and finished the game with 369 rushing yards. That's the most rushing yards they've posted since back in November of 2024.
Stillwater's win bumped their record up to 5-3. As for Cambridge/Salem, their victory bumped their record up to 8-1.
Saturday's matchup might be decided on the ground. Cambridge/Salem has been excellent on the ground this season, having averaged 190.7 rushing yards per game. However, it's not like Stillwater struggles in that department as they've been averaging 215.5 rushing yards. There's a good chance Saturday's game turns into a tough fight on the ground.
Cambridge/Salem took their win against Stillwater in their previous matchup back in September by a conclusive 33-7 score. In that contest, Cambridge/Salem amassed a halftime lead of 20-0, an impressive feat they'll look to repeat on Saturday.
