Hunt is preparing for their first conference matchup of the season on Friday. They will face off against East Wake at 4:00 p.m. Keep an eye on the score for this one: the two teams posted some lofty run totals in their previous games.
Hunt came up short against Northern Nash on Monday, falling 25-10. The Warriors have now taken an 'L' in back-to-back games.
Hannah Spell made the most of her time at bat despite the final result and went 1-for-2 with one home run and three RBI. The team also got some help courtesy of Hailey Mackey, who scored two runs while going 2-for-2.
Spell wasn't the only one working in the hit department: Hunt kept the outfield on their toes and finished the game with 11 hits. They easily outclassed their opponents in that department as Northern Nash only managed six hits.
Meanwhile, winning is always nice, but doing so behind a season-high score is even better (just ask East Wake). Their pitchers stepped up to hand Smithfield-Selma a 29-0 shutout on Tuesday. The Warriors have beaten the Spartans the last nine times they've met, but they better watch out: this was the closest the Spartans has come to flipping the script.
Scarlett Avila-Cristobal and Madison Keith made a big impact while hitting and pitching. On the mound, Avila-Cristobal tossed two innings while giving up no earned runs off one hit. Meanwhile, Keith tossed one inning while giving up no earned runs off one hit. What's more, she gave up only zero walks, the fewest she's had since back in March of 2024. At bat, Avila-Cristobal scored four runs and stole a base while getting on base in all four of her plate appearances, while Keith went 4-for-5 with three runs, four RBI, and one stolen base. That stolen base marked the first that Avila-Cristobal snagged this season.
In other batting news, Alissa Flood was incredible, scoring four runs and stealing a base while getting on base in all five of her plate appearances. The dominant performance also gave her a new career-high in doubles (two). Sophia Saucillo also deserves some recognition as she hit her first triple of the season.
Hunt now has a losing record of 1-2. As for East Wake, the victory got them back to even at 2-2.
Friday's match will be a test for both teams' pitchers. Hunt hasn't had any issues making contact this season, having earned a batting average of .413. However, it's not like East Wake struggles in that department as they've averaged .380. With both teams so capable at the plate, fans should be ready for an impressive hitting performance.
Hunt came up short against East Wake when the teams last played back in April of 2024, falling 7-4. Can Hunt avenge their defeat or is history doomed to repeat itself? We'll find out soon enough.
