Even though the Holy Name Green Wave have not done well against the Padua Franciscan Bruins recently (they were 2-7 in their previous nine matchups), they didn't let the past get in their way on Wednesday. In a tight contest that could have gone either way, Holy Name made off with a 50-49 victory over Padua Franciscan. For Holy Name, this counts as revenge for the 56-47 defeat Padua Franciscan walked away with the last time they faced one another back in December of 2022.
Holy Name can attribute much of their success to Honesti Williams, who dropped a double-double on ten points and 12 rebounds. Williams continues to roll, besting her previous point total in each of the last three games she's played. Another player making a difference was Maryelise Rispoli, who scored six points.
Padua Franciscan's loss shouldn't obscure the performances of Ally Tonsing, who scored ten points along with nine rebounds and three steals, and Sophia Spade who scored 18 points along with nine rebounds. Those nine rebounds set a new season-high mark for her.
Even though they lost, Padua Franciscan were smashing the offensive glass and finished the game with 25 offensive rebounds. That's the most offensive rebounds they've managed all season.
Holy Name's win bumped their record up to 5-3. As for Padua Franciscan, they are on a five-game losing streak that has dropped them down to 1-7.
Both squads will have to hit the road in their upcoming games. Holy Name will wrap up 2023 with a road trip to face off against Brooklyn at 6:00 p.m. on Thursday. Brooklyn is coming into the game on a five-game losing streak. Padua Franciscan is on the road again on Wednesday and play against Rocky River at 11:00 a.m. on December 27th. Hopefully Rocky River focused on turnovers this week since the team gave up 24 on Wednesday.
