Softball Recap: Lake Placid Gets the Win

Lake Placid lost a heartbreaker the last time they played Winter Haven, but it's fair to say they got their revenge given the result of Friday's matchup. The Dragons' pitchers stepped up to hand the Blue Devils a 13-0 shutout on Friday. Considering the Dragons have won nine contests by more than five runs this season, Friday's blowout was nothing new.

Kaylee Grigsby and Emily Tharp made a splash while hitting and pitching. On the mound, Grigsby tossed two innings while giving up no earned runs or hits. Meanwhile, Tharp tossed three innings while giving up no earned runs off three hits. She has been nothing but reliable on the mound: she hasn't given up more than two walks in eight consecutive appearances. At bat, Grigsby went a perfect 2-for-2 with three RBI, one triple, and one stolen base, while Tharp went a perfect 4-for-4 with three runs, one stolen base, and one double. Those four hits gave Tharp a new career-high.

In other batting news, Jillian Garduno was a standout: she went 2-for-3 with three stolen bases, two runs, and one double. Those three stolen bases gave her a new career-high. Allie Oliveros also deserves some recognition as she hit her first triple of the season.

Lake Placid always had someone on base and finished the game having posted an OBP of .667. They easily outclassed their opponents in that department as Winter Haven only posted an OBP of .211.

The victory got Lake Placid back to even at 11-11. As for Winter Haven, they have been struggling recently as they've lost ten of their last 11 games. That's put a noticeable dent in their 3-15 record this season.

Lake Placid will be playing in front of their home fans against Avon Park at 7:30 p.m. on Tuesday. As for Winter Haven, they will take on Hardee at 7:00 p.m. on Tuesday. The Wildcats have struggled to contain batters this season (they've allowed 10.79 runs per game on average), something the Blue Devils will no doubt try to take advantage of.
