The Carbondale Terriers will face off against the Mt. Vernon Rams at 4:30 p.m. on Tuesday. Carbondale is strutting in with some hitting muscle as they've averaged 8.4 runs per game this season.
Carbondale's usually-dominant pitching crew will be looking to make up for Saturday's struggle, when Tolono Unity hitters got past them. The Terriers took a 10-7 hit to the loss column at the hands of the Rockets on Saturday. The Terriers have now taken an 'L' in back-to-back games.
Chloe Dryer put in work while hitting and pitching. She looked comfortable on the mound, tossing five innings while giving up just one earned (and six unearned) runs off eight hits. She has been consistent recently: she hasn't given up more than one earned run in three consecutive appearances. She was also solid in the batter's box, scoring two runs while going 2-for-4.
In other batting news, Sydney Tanner made the most of her time at bat despite the final result and scored a run while going 3-for-4. Another player making a difference was Ella Karayiannis, who scored two runs while going 2-for-4.
Meanwhile, Mt. Vernon unfortunately witnessed the end of their four-game winning streak on Friday. They fell just short of Mascoutah by a score of 6-5.
Like Carbondale, Mt. Vernon also got a great game from a two-way player: Danicah Tobin. On the mound, she didn't allow a single earned run while striking out eight over five innings pitched. Tobin was also big at the plate, going 3-for-4 with one home run, two runs, and two RBI. That home run was her first of the season.
In other batting news, Allie Sweeten was cooking despite her team's loss, going 2-for-3 with one triple, two RBI, and one run.
Carbondale's loss dropped their record down to 5-5. As for Mt. Vernon, their defeat dropped their record down to 5-2.
Carbondale's speedy runners might be the difference in Tuesday's contest. The Terriers have been swiping bases left and right this season, having averaged 2.7 stolen bases per game. It's a different story for Mt. Vernon, though, as they've been averaging only 1.3 stolen bases. Will they be able to secure the bases, or will Carbondale continue to outrun the ball?
Carbondale came out on top in a nail-biter against Mt. Vernon in their previous meeting back in May of 2024, sneaking past 3-1. Do the Terriers have another victory up their sleeve, or will the Rams turn the tables on them? We'll have the answer soon enough.
