Each year since 2006, MaxPreps has recognized outstanding performers in high school girls basketball. America's source for high school sports continues the tradition to close out the 2022-23 season by naming the top player in each state. Selections are based on team success and individual excellence in addition to local and state accolades.
Alexis Bordas of
Wheeling Park (Wheeling) is the 2022-23 MaxPreps West Virginia High School Girls Basketball Player of the Year. The 5-foot-8 sophomore guard helped the Patriots go 25-3 and reach the Class AAAA state championship game.
For the season, Bordas averaged 20.2 points, 4.9 rebounds and 3.9 steals per game. In a 54-50 loss to Morgantown in the title game, she dropped 24 points – including 21 in the second half.
In two years at Wheeling Park, Bordas has helped the program 44-8 and already surpassed the 1,000-point mark.
Dionna Gray of
Huntington was the 2021-22 MaxPreps West Virginia Player of the Year. Now a freshman at Kent State, Gray averaged 21.3 points, 6.4 assists, 6.1 steals and 4.3 rebounds per game for the Class AAAA state champions.
Each state's MaxPreps Player of the Year will be considered for inclusion in the MaxPreps All-America Team, which will be released in April.
