Pittsburg is 9-1 against Antioch since November of 2014, and they'll have a chance to extend that success on Saturday. The Pittsburg Pirates will stay at home for another week and welcome the Antioch Panthers at 1:30 p.m. on November 4th. Both squads will be entering this one on the heels of a big victory.
Last Friday, Pittsburg made easy work of Liberty and carried off a 34-13 win. Given Pittsburg's advantage in MaxPreps' California football rankings (they are ranked 35th, while Liberty is ranked 137th), the result wasn't entirely unexpected.
Elijah Bow was his usual excellent self, rushing for 174 yards and two touchdowns. The team also got some help courtesy of Marley Alcantara, who threw for 158 yards and two touchdowns on only 14 passes.
Meanwhile, Antioch got the win against Deer Valley on Friday by a conclusive 44-21. 44 seems to be a good number for Antioch as the squad scooped up a win with the same number of points in their previous game.
It was another big night for Larenzo Mayfield, who rushed for 170 yards and three touchdowns while picking up 10.0 yards per carry, and also threw for 111 yards and two touchdowns. Mayfield hasn't dropped below 100 rushing yards for four straight games. Another player making a difference was Curtis Tucker, who rushed for 112 yards.
Pittsburg's win was their ninth straight at home, bumping their overall record up to 9-0. Those victories were due in large part to their offensive dominance across that stretch, as they averaged 41.9 points per game. As for Antioch, the win makes it two in a row for them and bumps their season record up to 7-2.
Saturday's game might be decided on the ground as these two are both standouts in the run game. Pittsburg has been unstoppable on the ground this season, having averaged 202.3 rushing yards per game. However, it's not like Antioch struggles in that department as they've been even better at 237.4 per game. It's looking like Saturday's game might have some serious battles in the trenches.
Everything came up roses for Pittsburg against Antioch when the teams last played back in November of 2022 as the squad secured a 55-22 win. Will Pittsburg repeat their success, or does Antioch have a new game plan this time around? We'll find out soon enough.
