The Southwestern Warriors were the 58-56 winner over the Wayne County Cardinals when they last played one another back in January, but their luck changed this time around. Southwestern fell to the Cardinals 57-53. The loss was a bit of a surprise, as Southwestern came into the contest with a sizable advantage in MaxPreps' Kentucky basketball rankings (they are ranked 26th, while the Cardinals are ranked 109th).
When it comes to explaining why Southwestern lost on Monday, one person who can't be blamed is Payton Acey. Despite the final result, she dropped a double-double on 14 points and 19 rebounds. The team also got some help courtesy of Megan Loudermilk, who scored 13 points.
This is the second loss in a row for Southwestern and nudges their season record down to 15-8. As for Wayne County, their win bumped their record up to 9-11.
Both squads are looking forward to the support of their home crowds in their upcoming games. Southwestern will take on the Maroons at 6:00 p.m. on Friday. As for Wayne County, they won't have much time to rest: their next match is against the Patriots at 7:30 p.m. on February 6th. Lincoln County is no doubt hoping to put an end to a three-game streak of away losses.
