AAAA Region 8 recap Oct. 23, 2012
Monroe Area extended the longest winning streak in AAAA Region 8 this week by beating Walnut Grove, 49-6. The victory was the seventh in a row for the Hurricanes.
Johnson moved up to 242 from 273 in the state rankings this week, the biggest jump in the league. The Knights were able to make move up by besting Druid Hills 42-15.
Lanier's offense was tough to stop this week, as it produced the league's top passer, rusher and receiver. Taylor Grant threw for 289 and three touchdowns and Marty Sanders had 142 yards receiving. On the ground Tario Fuller chipped in 116 yards. Jahbril Jones helped Lanier's passing attack out by catching five balls for 119 yards.
Lanier's Grant and Sanders have formed a dynamic duo this season, leading the league in both passing and receiving yards. Grant has thrown for 1385 yards this season, while Sanders has 29 catches for 700 yards. Stephens County's Chaz Thornton leads the league in rushing yards with 791.
A big matchup in AAAA Region 8 this week will be when Lumpkin County takes on Chestatee. The Indians are in seventh place, while the War Eagles are in second place.
There should be lots of points scored when the Indians and Lanier face off this week. The top two offenses in the league, Stephens County comes in having scored 202 this season, while Lanier has scored 135. The Indians scored 49 points last week as they beat Madison County.
Stephens County took down the Red Raiders 49-0 last week, the largest margin of any game.
