The Gillespie Miners are taking a road trip to square off against the Marquette Catholic Explorers at 4:30 p.m. on Thursday. Gillespie is coming into the contest hot, having won their last four games.
On Wednesday, Gillespie needed a bit of extra time to put away Staunton. They sure made it a nail-biter, but they managed to escape with a 5-4 victory over the Bulldogs. For those keeping track at home, that's the closest win the Miners have posted since April 27, 2024.
Carson Hailstone was excellent, going 2-for-3 with one run, one double, and one RBI. The team also got some help courtesy of Luke Schuckenbrock, who went 2-for-5 with one run, one double, and one RBI.
Meanwhile, Marquette Catholic earned a 6-1 victory over Wesclin on Monday. The win made it back-to-back victories for the Explorers.
Toby Eberlin looked comfortable as he pitched one inning while giving up no earned runs or hits. He has been consistent recently: he hasn't given up more than one walk in four consecutive appearances.
At the plate, the team relied heavily on Karson Morrissey, who got on base in all three of his plate appearances with one stolen base, two RBI, and one run. That's the most RBI he has posted since back in March. Tyler Roth was another key player, going 1-for-4 with one home run and two RBI.
Marquette Catholic was getting hits left and right and finished the game having posted a batting average of .379. They easily outclassed their opponents in that department as Wesclin only posted a batting average of .200.
Gillespie's win was their fourth straight on the road, which pushed their record up to 12-7. Those road victories came thanks in part to their pitching effort, having only surrendered 3.0 runs on average over those games. As for Marquette Catholic, their record now sits at 14-12.
