Montello had lost ten straight on the road dating back to last season, but on Thursday they dropped down to 0-4 to make it 11. They came up short against the Markesan Hornets, falling 11-1. Unfortunately, that's the second time they've come up short against the Hornets this season, as they also lost their prior matchup 13-1 on Tuesday.
Cody Schultz was cooking despite his team's loss, going 2-for-3 with two doubles, one stolen base, and one RBI. Those doubles marked the first that he has hit this season.
As for Markesan, the win was the third in a row for them, bringing their record up to 3-0. Those victories came thanks in part to their hitting performance across that stretch, as they've averaged 9.3 runs this season.
On Markesan's side, Benton VandeBerg and Jackson Laper made a splash no matter where they played. On the mound, VandeBerg didn't allow a single earned run and allowed only two hits while striking out nine over five innings pitched. Meanwhile, Laper pitched one inning while giving up no earned runs off one hit. At bat, VandeBerg went 2-for-3 with three stolen bases, two runs, and two RBI, while Laper got on base in three of his four plate appearances with two stolen bases, one run, and one double.
In other batting news, the team relied heavily on Bowyn Laper, who went 2-for-3 with two runs, one double, and one RBI. Another player making a difference was Keaton Jerome, who went a perfect 2-for-2 with two runs and one stolen base.
Both teams are looking forward to the support of their home crowds in their upcoming games. Montello will take on Cambria-Friesland at 5:00 p.m. on Monday. As for Markesan, they will face off against Fall River at 5:00 p.m. on Monday.
