Basketball Game Preview: SouthWest Edgecombe Cougars vs. Martin County Gators

Having just played yesterday, the SouthWest Edgecombe Cougars will jump right back in to play the Martin County Gators at 3:00 p.m. on Saturday. Both come into the game bolstered by wins in their previous matches.

On Friday, SouthWest Edgecombe really took it to Nash Central for the full four quarters, racking up a 62-32 victory. With the Cougars ahead 31-11 at the half, the contest was all but over already.

Alijah Lassiter had a dynamite game, going 8-for-12 to rack up 20 points. He has been hot recently, having also posted two or more steals the last four times he's played. Another player making a difference was Justin Bridgers, who shot 45% from the field on his way to 14 points and six rebounds.

Meanwhile, Martin County posted their closest win since February 5th on Thursday. In a tight matchup that could have gone either way, they made off with a 47-46 victory over North Edgecombe. The win made it back-to-back victories for the Gators.

Martin County's win came from a few key players SouthWest Edgecombe will need to keep an eye on. One of the most notable was Kamarion Larry, who posted 13 points and seven boards. The team also got some help courtesy of Ter'Quavious Roberson, who earned seven points.

Martin County smashed the offensive glass and finished the game with 14 offensive rebounds. That strong performance was nothing new for the team: they've now pulled down at least eight offensive boards in 16 consecutive games dating back to last season.

Martin County's record is now 2-0. As for SouthWest Edgecombe, they now have a winning record of 2-1.

SouthWest Edgecombe was able to grind out a solid win over Martin County in their previous matchup back in December of 2023, winning 72-59. Do the Cougars have another victory up their sleeve, or will the Gators turn the tables on them? We'll have the answer soon enough.
