After a string of three wins, the Whiting Oilers's good fortune finally ran out on Thursday. They took a 55-41 bruising from Wheeler. If Whiting was looking for revenge after losing 41-37 to them when the teams met, then they'll just have to keep looking.
When it comes to explaining why Whiting lost, one person who can't be blamed is Alyssa Quinones. Despite the final result, she scored 23 points along with five steals. Victoria Velez was another key contributor, scoring nine points along with three steals.
Wheeler had a senior duo take command as Lexi Cutka scored 23 points and Abby Ordonez scored 20 points along with eight rebounds and seven assists. That makes it three consecutive games in which Ordonez has scored at least a third of Wheeler's points. Another player making a difference was Izabela Schumacher, who scored six points along with seven rebounds.
Whiting's loss dropped their record down to 8-12-1. As for Wheeler, they have been performing incredibly well recently as they've won seven of their last eight contests, which provided a massive bump to their 10-11 record this season.
Whiting won't have much time to rest: their next match is against the Red Devils at 7:00 p.m. on January 26th. Hopefully Lowell focused on turnovers this week since the team gave up 17 last Tuesday. As for Wheeler, they will head out on the road to square off against the Brickies at 2:00 p.m. on Saturday. Hobart has now lost seven straight, and the team is hunting for their first win since December 29.
