Foothill and Coronado are an even 5-5 against one another since April of 2015, but likely not for long. The Foothill Falcons will look to defend their home field on Wednesday against the Coronado Cougars at 3:00 p.m. Foothill is currently enjoying a perfect season and no doubt wants to keep things rolling.
Foothill is headed into the game having just posted their closest victory since March 27, 2024 on Saturday. They had just enough and edged out Southeast Career Tech 5-3.
Matt Masias looked comfortable as he pitched three innings while giving up just two earned runs off three hits.
On the hitting side, Foothill let Thayne Watson and Matthew Szymarek run wild. Watson scored a run and stole a base while going 2-for-3, while Szymarek went 1-for-4 with one home run. Watson also put up a stolen base, which was his first of the season. Another player making a difference was Tyler Straily, who scored a run while going 2-for-4.
Foothill kept the outfield on their toes and finished the game with 11 hits. They easily outclassed their opponents in that department as Southeast Career Tech only managed five hits.
Meanwhile, Coronado can bid farewell to their six-game losing streak dating back to last season thanks to their game on Saturday. They walked away with a 9-4 win over Rancho. The Cougars' hitters stepped up their game for this one, as that was the most runs they've scored all season.
Mariano Rodriguez looked comfortable as he tossed three innings while giving up no earned runs off two hits.
At the plate, Milano Bradley and Santiago Cocon did most of the damage at the plate: Bradley scored two runs and stole a base while going 2-for-2, while Cocon got on base in all four of his plate appearances with two runs and one triple. Drew Steffen was another key player, scoring two runs and stealing a base while going 2-for-5.
Coronado's victory was their fifth straight at home dating back to last season, which pushed their record up to 1-4. The wins came thanks in part to their pitching effort, having only surrendered 3.4 runs on average over those games. As for Foothill, their win bumped their record up to 4-0.
Foothill was able to grind out a solid victory over Coronado in their previous matchup back in April of 2024, winning 5-0. Does Foothill have another victory up their sleeve, or will Coronado turn the tables on them? We'll have the answer soon enough.
