Tyler Skaggs made a big impact while hitting and pitching. He looked comfortable on the mound, not allowing a single earned run over five innings pitched. He has been nothing but reliable: he hasn't given up more than one walk in three consecutive appearances. He was also big at the plate, going 1-for-3 with one triple, one run, and one RBI. That triple was his first of the season.
In other batting news, Owen Dumbroski was incredible, getting on base in three of his four plate appearances with one home run, three RBI, and two runs. Another player making a difference was Aiden Corbett, who went a perfect 2-for-2 with five RBI and one double.
Serra Catholic always had someone on base and finished the game having posted an OBP of .536. They are a perfect 5-0 when they post an OBP of .513 or better.
Meanwhile, Belle Vernon got the win against Laurel Highlands on Wednesday by a conclusive 9-2. The win continues a trend for the Leopards in their matchups with the Mustangs: they've now won four in a row.
Like Serra Catholic, Belle Vernon also got a great game from a two-way player: Lucas Judy. He didn't allow a single earned run while striking out six over seven innings pitched. Judy was also solid in the batter's box, going a perfect 3-for-3 with one double and one RBI.
In other batting news, the team relied heavily on Seth Tomalski, who went 2-for-3 with three RBI and one double. Those two hits gave him a new career-high. Alonzo Wade was another key player, scoring a run and stealing a base while going 1-for-3.
Belle Vernon's victory bumped their record up to 7-0. As for Serra Catholic, their win bumped their record up to 6-2.
Thursday's contest might come down to which pitcher can control the ball better. Serra Catholic has hit smart this season, having averaged an OBP of .516.
