Newton had lost five straight headed into Friday's contest, but Hayden Mulvey didn't let it get to six. The Eagles sure made it a nail-biter, but they managed to escape with a 24-21 victory over the Robinson Maroons on Friday with plenty of help from Mulvey, who threw for 221 yards and one TD while completing 82.4% of his passes, and also rushed for 62 yards on only eight carries. His passing game has become a key predictor of Newton's success: the team is 2-1 when his passer rating is 100 or higher, but only 0-4 otherwise.

When it comes to explaining why Robinson lost, don't look at Reese Johnson. Despite the final result, he rushed for 138 yards and one score, and also threw for 100 yards and one touchdown. Speaking of playmakers, who could forget AJ Knoblett, who went all the way with a kickoff return for a touchdown.

Newton's win was their first in the conference, bumping their conference record up to 1-4 and their overall record up to 2-5. As for Robinson, they now have a losing record of 3-4.
