San Leandro is 2-8 against Alameda since April of 2017 but they'll have a chance to close the gap a little bit on Wednesday. The Pirates are taking a road trip to challenge the Hornets at 4:30 p.m. San Leandro is strutting in with some hitting muscle as they've averaged 9.4 runs per game this season.
San Leandro will roll into the matchup after a wild two-game stretch: they didn't score any runs on Wednesday, then bounced right back against Piedmont on Thursday. The Pirates put the hurt on the Highlanders with a sharp 11-1 win. The victory continues a trend for the Pirates in their matchups with the Highlanders: they've now won three in a row.
Marina Sacrey made a big impact while hitting and pitching. She struck out seven batters over seven innings while giving up just one earned run off four hits (and only one walk). She has been nothing but reliable on the mound: she hasn't given up more than two walks in eight consecutive appearances. She was also big at the plate, going 2-for-4 with one double and one RBI.
In other batting news, Jacella Onate was incredible, getting on base in all five of her plate appearances with three RBI and one run. That's the most RBI she has posted since back in March. Another player making a difference was Camryn Gilbert, who got on base in four of her five plate appearances with one stolen base, one run, and one RBI.
San Leandro always had someone on base and finished the game having posted an OBP of .578. They easily outclassed their opponents in that department as Piedmont only posted an OBP of .160.
Meanwhile, Alameda unfortunately witnessed the end of their three-game winning streak on Monday. They fell just short of California by a score of 5-3. For those keeping track at home, that's the closest loss the Hornets have suffered since March 20th.
Alameda saw three different players step up and record at least one hit. One of them was Julia Lambert, who went 2-for-3 with one RBI.
Alameda's defeat dropped their record down to 11-8-1. As for San Leandro, their record now sits at 17-3.
Both the two teams just can't seem to miss. San Leandro has been making plenty of contact this season, having averaged 9.6 hits per game. However, it's not like Alameda struggles in that department as they've been averaging only 4.7 hits. With both teams so capable at the plate, fans should be ready for an impressive hitting performance.
San Leandro might still be hurting after the 11-2 loss they got from Alameda in their previous matchup back in April of 2024. Can the Pirates avenge their defeat or is history doomed to repeat itself? We'll find out soon enough.
